A few insights from Dave Earley on prayer…

How to pray for your church family. Pray that we would:

  • truly love and serve one another (John 13:14).
  • be protected from the evil one (John 17:15).
  • be sanctified and freed through the truth (John 8:32; 17:16).
  • be united (John 17:21–23).
  • be, and make, disciples (Matthew 28:19, 20).
  • be devoted to the Word, prayer, fellowship, worship, ministry, and evangelism (Acts 2:42–47).

A few other quotes from Prayer: The Timeless Secret of High Impact Leaders by Dave Earley.

There are many important tasks for the leader. Planning, vision casting, team building, communicating, and policy making are important responsibilities for an effective leader. But Christian leadership is spiritual work. Spiritual work depends upon spiritual tools. No spiritual tool is as significant or powerful as prayer. As Andrew Murray reminds us, “In spiritual work everything depends upon prayer.” (Kindle Locations 179-182).

When I look at the massive responsibility of trying to influence people for God, I’m stunned by my own insufficiency. Who am I? When it comes to worldly influence, I’m a “nobody.” I can’t do it. But I know someone who can—God. He can do more in a tiny fraction of a second than I can accomplish in years. He can do it better, bigger, and more permanently than I can even imagine. (Kindle Locations 195-199).

Effective leaders understand the unrestricted reach of prayer. As a leader, I’m often frustrated by the fact that I cannot be in two places at once. But God can. As a parent I’m limited in that I cannot be with my sons when they go off to school or work. But God can. (Kindle Locations 252-255).

Prayer is the ageless act of highly effective Christian leaders. Prayer must not be slighted. Prayer must be prioritized and practiced to achieve maximum impact. (Kindle Locations 96-98).

Prayer is certainly not the only act of leadership, but it is the indisputable common denominator of spiritual difference - makers in every generation and in any setting. (Kindle Locations 99-100).

A study of the lives of high-impact spiritual leaders reveals that they take time to pray for their people. Consider Moses. His primary ministry as he led the Hebrews through the wilderness can be summarized in six simple words: “So Moses prayed for the people.” (Numbers 21:7) (Kindle Locations 706-710).
