Keep Pressing On in the Joy of Jesus
As we prepare for Resurrection Sunday, I would like to share with you some verses from the Book of Philippians that celebrate the glory and joy of Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Commentators observe that no other noun occurs more than “Christ” – and Our Lord is front and center throughout the letter. Philippians 2:6–11 gives us a grand Christological hymn:
The Glory of Jesus Christ Our Lord
Philippians 2:6–11, “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
The Joy of Jesus Christ Our Lord
Philippians 1:4, “always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,”
Philippians 1:18, “What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,”
Philippians 1:25, “Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith,”
Philippians 2:2, “complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”
Philippians 2:17–18, “Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. [18] Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”
Philippians 2:28, “I am the more eager to send him, therefore, that you may rejoice at seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious.”
Philippians 2:29, “So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men,”
Philippians 3:1, “Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.”
Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
Philippians 4:10, “I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.”
