The Character of Leadership – Integrity

Over the next few weeks, I would like to share some characteristics of leadership. Seminary president and leadership teacher Jeff Iorg has been a blessing in my life as I have studied the subject of leadership and sought to mature more as a leader. I have often recommended his book The Character of Leadership. I am indebted to him for sharing with us “key words” that should characterize our leadership.

Integrity is one of those words. Integrity is a necessary distinctiveness of leadership, and in particular, Christian leadership. Integrity comes from the root word “integer” – which means whole, complete, or undivided.

The Bible contains many verses that speak to the need for leaders to have integrity. Here is a sampling for your consideration:

Proverbs 10:9, Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.

Proverbs 28:6, Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.

By the way, there are many verses from Proverbs that are applicable.

1 Peter 3:16, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

Colossians 3:23, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

Job 2:3, And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.”

Titus 1:7, For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,

Daniel 1:8, But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore, he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

James 1:22, But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

A Prayer for Us: “Father, You are holy. I pray I will live each moment with a looming awareness of Your presence. I must not live in fear of any other, but I pray I will have a holy fear and reverence for Your holiness. Praise You and thank You for redeeming me, for your grace and mercy, for your sanctifying work, for your strength. Lord, I need You. Praise You for Your inerrant Word and indwelling Spirit. In Jesus, Amen.

You are not alone as you lead. The Lord is with you. I am thankful we can advance the Gospel of Jesus Christ together. May God encourage you today!
